Neck Pain
Is It Difficult For You To Sleep, Lift Weights, Look Into Overhead Cabinets, Look Over Your Shoulder While Driving, Or Carry Out Your Daily Tasks At Home Or Work Because Of Neck Pain?
Does This Describe You?
- You expected the discomfort to subside after a few days or weeks, but it has persisted.
- You've already tried several at-home treatments like heating pads, ice, and TENS devices, but they didn't help, right?
- Did you get a couple of massages, but the discomfort returned a few days later?
- You visited a medical professional, who examined you, gave you an injection, or prescribed medication, but the effects wore off quickly?
- You previously underwent physical therapy, but it was unsuccessful.
- You've determined you can get along OK if you just avoid making the situation worse by engaging in painful activities, right?
We’re Here To Help You Find Solutions That Will Last.
Common Neck Disorders We Treat:
- Headache
- Joint Stiffness
- Muscle Strains and Tension
- Degenerative Disc Disease & Injuries
Typical Causes:
- Impaired Mechanics: Weakness and muscle imbalance result in a reduced range of motion, while joint stiffness and muscle inflexibility compromise posture.
- Injury: A sudden load or impact on the tissue causes injury.
- Chronic Compensatory Mechanisms: Avoidance of activity in some muscle groups and the overuse of other tissues due to past injuries or the fear of future injuries.
Backward Arrow Physical Therapy's Approach:
- Proper neck and thoracic (midback) posture.
- Reduce tension in the muscles of the upper neck.
- Increase the flexibility of the chest and neck muscles.
- Manipulation, manual joint mobilization, and manual traction can help to improve joint mobility.
- Strengthen the muscles that flex the neck and shoulder blades more effectively.
- Massage, instrument-assisted mobilization, and cupping can all help to increase tissue mobility.
- Specific nerve exercises can help to reduce nerve sensitivity (numbness, tingling, and pain that extends down the arm).
- Develop your functional and plyometric exercises (throwing, catching, pushing, pulling, pressing).
Important Facts to Remember:
- Tissues Recover: The body can heal itself, but our system occasionally becomes stuck in the inflammatory stage of tissue repair and requires assistance to progress to recovery.
- MRI and X-ray Imaging Results: These frequently correlate poorly with the actual cause of pain. Imaging may reveal tissue damage despite no pain or functional impairment. Additionally, pain may exist despite no prominent findings on imaging; this is typically the result of excessive nervous tissue sensitivity.
- Soreness After Exercise:Although it is not the intended outcome, soreness after exercise does not always cause alarm. True strength gains necessitate a system overload that results in microdamage. That tissue grows back stronger and thicker than it did the first time. The soreness should be used as a gauge when determining whether the tissue is ready to handle more load. If the tissue is not yet ready, training intensity should be reduced until it is.
- Return to Activities: It is almost always possible to return to previous or desired activities with the help of sound instruction, good mechanics, and progressive tissue loading.
